Paddleboarding Courses

We have training courses covering Safety, Skills Improvement and also Instructor courses.  All of the following courses are British Canoeing certified, with British Canoeing recently being named as one of the governing bodies for SUP in the UK.  This means you’re learning from quality-tested and approved course content from certified instructors and providers.  The courses below are open to all (age and/or pre-requisites are noted) and can be booked as bespoke training courses for your friends, family, team, colleagues or community groups.  Feel free to email us with any queries on the content or booking.

SUP Safer

This half-day British Canoeing SUP Safer course is open to all.  It’s based on the ethos of ‘supporting the paddler’, encouraging individuals to consider where they paddle, the equipment they use and provide practical solutions if they get into difficulty.

Best for: Beginners looking to gain confidence, Paddlers preparing to paddle independently, Families wanting to increase safety awareness

Course Description

The 4-hour programme is delivered within a sheltered water environment where you will explore and learn to appreciate the potential hazards you might encounter and be prepared to avoid or deal with them.  This course covers both theory and practical – but we will emphasise the practical aspects and give plenty of practice time.   

This course requires a minimum of 4 to run.  It can also be booked as a private course for groups of 4-8.  There are no pre-requisites but you must be able to swim 50metres to join the course.

ASSESSMENT/CERTIFICATION

Attendance certificates are issued to candidates by their Delivery Centre, following a recommendation from the course provider.

Course Description

Your Stand Up Paddleboard Sheltered Water Award will give you an understanding of how to plan and paddle an enjoyable and safe trip on a Stand Up Paddleboard. You will be able to journey in water that is no more than 200 metres from the shore and up to force 3 winds.

When paddling SUP you need to be in control. This award will develop a range of skills and knowledge to get you safely through your journey. Balance and control of the board is important. You will learn the correct feet, body positioning and strokes required to keep you balanced. This can be whilst moving forwards or whilst steering the board. Your Coach will also ask you to consider how you could adapt your plans if needed should conditions on the water change. You will also need to know how to rescue yourself or another paddler using a SUP should they, or you, get into difficulty.

COURSE CONTENT

During the course you will look at the environmental factors to determine how far you can safely travel from shore. Whilst identifying safe exit points and expanding your knowledge of rescue techniques. It will give you the proficient skills to adapt to problems and enable you to have a safe and enjoyable day out on a stand up paddleboard.

COURSE ASSESSMENT

The SUP Sheltered Water Award has no formal assessment. Each day you spend SUP paddling will further expand your skills and knowledge. With no trips ever the same, you will never stop learning. You and your Coach will work through what you wish to focus on and tailor your sessions around your goals. The award will be certificated when you are ready.

SUP Personal Performance Award

In order to have an enjoyable day out on the water, some key decisions need to be made to ensure we are in the right place at the right time. During this course, you will learn how to assess weather, wind and water conditions. 

Best for: Paddlers with some experience who are looking to progress quickly, Paddlers planning to paddle independently/in small groups

Core Coach Award

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Coach Award is an entry point coaching qualification and offers discipline specific pathways across all disciplines and environments. The coach is able to plan, deliver and review progressive sessions safely, effectively and independently.

Course Description

The Coach Award is designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills within the discipline chosen. This will include coaching beginners new to the sport, or paddlers looking to develop their skills in the given discipline or environment.

Content & Assessment

The Coach Award content is delivered through the Core Coach Training and the Discipline Specific Training.

The Core Coach Training will explore different approaches to coaching, understanding and enabling learning, and some core coaching skills. You will also be supported in evolving your personal coaching development plan to enable you to take your learning into practice after the course. The Core Coach Training can be done as a 2 day practical course or an online course delivered through a series of modules.

The Discipline Specific Training focuses on HOW to coach the discipline specific skills and WHAT you will be coaching. The training explores how to coach technical and tactical skills. The course will help coaches plan and deliver safe, enjoyable, progressive coaching sessions and explore specifics to help coaches coach some typical athletes/learners relevant to you/your discipline.

Assessment

At assessment, candidates will be required to complete the following assessment tasks:

  • Assessment Discussion Task
  • Practical Coaching
  • Rescue Skills
  • Personal Skills*
  • Background Knowledge, Understanding and Experience
